County offering temporary delivery service for garbage bags

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Unprecedented times call for unorthodox services.

Wellington County officials have announced the county is now offering a temporary home delivery service for garbage bags as part of its ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The yellow bags are still available at local retailers such as grocery stores, pharmacies and hardware stores – all deemed essential businesses and able to stay open – but shopping trips are being discouraged by health officials, unless absolutely necessary. And, for the elderly or others who may be vulnerable, those outings are just not an option.

“We have heard from residents who are self-isolating that they are finding it challenging to get user-pay garbage bags,” said Warden Kelly Linton in an April 2 press release.

“The county is pleased to be able to offer this temporary solution to assist our most vulnerable citizens with their waste disposal needs.”

To access the temporary delivery service visit the county website or call 519-837-2601.

“Maintaining user fees for waste in the midst of the county’s COVID-19 response helps limit the amount of waste that is being placed roadside,” stated Das Soligo, manager of Solid Waste Services.

“Right now, we’re seeing more household garbage being generated than usual. The county’s curbside waste collectors are working long hours to collect everyone’s waste, and the user-pay system helps us ensure this service won’t be compromised.”

Officials are reminding residents that all county waste facilities are closed until further notice, so they must use curbside collection services, with garbage placed in a county-issued user-pay bag.

Curbside collection continues on the regular schedule. To confirm a collection day or for more information, visit the county website or email wasteinfo@wellington.ca.
