County council considering sound system

GUELPH – Wellington County council is considering the installation of a sound system in the council chamber here.

At the Jan. 30 meeting councillor Allan Alls introduced a motion requesting “staff be asked to investigate the cost and practicality of a sound system in the county chambers.”

Alls, who announced his intention to introduce the motion at the November council meeting, said he was approached afterward by several people thanking him for raising the issue.

“Our chamber at Erin (where Alls is mayor) is smaller than this and we have a sound system and it works really well, partly because we record all our meetings and so the public can see what we’re saying,” said Alls.

The resolution to investigate a sound system was approved.

Acknowledgement

Also at the Jan. 30 meeting, councillor Don McKay introduced a notice of motion calling for the addition of an acknowledgement of Indigenous territories at county functions.

McKay said his motion, which will be introduced at the Feb. 27 meeting, will stipulate that “at beginning of our council meeting, or any other meeting or event where it’s appropriate, we acknowledge the Indigenous people on whose traditional territory we are meeting.”
