County closing administration centre, social services offices to the public

GUELPH – The county has decided to close its administration centre here in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As more information becomes available, the County of Wellington is making additional changes to slow the spread of COVID-19,” states a March 17 press release.

On March 18 the county announced the cancellation of the March 26 council meeting. Later that same day, the county announced the council meeting is back on – and rescheduled to the next day, March 20 at 10am. Then, on March 19, the county announced the meeting is cancelled.

Also closed to the public as of 4:30pm on March 17 are:

– social services offices (for emergency assistance call 519-837-6274);

– county garages; and

– county re-use centres (waste facilities will remain open but residents are encouraged to use the curbside collection instead of bringing waste to county facilities).

The changes are in addition to previous closures announced by the county.

On March 14 the county decided to cancel March Break programming at the museum as well as all programs at libraries across the county. The museum and libraries are closed.

On March 16 the county announced closure of all its child care and learning centres indefinitely, as of March 18.

The county also announced all rentals are cancelled at county libraries until at least April 30.

“At this time, all essential services will be provided and we will continue to operate and support our residents as best we can,” said Warden Kelly Linton.

“The health and safety of our residents and our staff continues to remain our top priority as we navigate through this rapidly changing situation.

“The County of Wellington will continue to monitor the situation closely and we will be making all appropriate changes as necessary.”

The county is posting up-to-date information on social media and on its website.
