Advertiser wins seven OCNA awards

TORONTO - The Wellington Advertiser received seven Better Newspaper Competition awards at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) gala on April 5.

The newspaper took first place for special section, photo layout, local retail layout and in-house promotion; second place for its website and in general excellence; and third place for vertical product (the Grand and Gorgeous tourism publication).

“I am proud of our team’s showing this year,” said Advertiser publisher Dave Adsett. “Everyone works hard every week to put out a great newspaper and it’s rewarding when peers across Ontario validate that effort.”

The Advertiser’s 50th anniversary feature, published in the April 13, 2018 edition, received first place for the special section category.

Judge Amanda Zimmer called the feature “a great community keepsake” that was “very well presented.”

Last year’s Riverfest Elora photo spread won first place for best photo layout.

“Great job to Jaime Myslik, Chris Daponte and Jacqueline Furfaro,” said judge Carol Farnalls about the Aug. 23, 2018 spread designed by Helen Michel.

“One of the best photo layouts I’ve seen ... Quality of photography, layout and design received top scores.”

A Christmas ad for Guelph Hyundai, designed by Furfaro and sold by Glenn George, won the local retail layout category.

Farnalls said the ad, which appeared in the Dec. 15, 2017 issue, was “easy to read with plenty of information” and a “clean layout.”

The Advertiser’s Free Movie Night ad, which was designed by Michel and appeared in the Sept. 20, 2018 edition, won first place for in-house promotion.

“Great use of space on a page,” said judge Karen Kavanagh, noting the ad feels like a movie ad in its design.

Adsett concluded, “It was great to see our staff recognized as the best of best from across Ontario in many categories this year.”
