Overnight fire causes $50,000 damage

Overnight fire causes $50,000 damage

by Mike Robinson

FERGUS - An overnight fire caused $50,000 to a home here.

Deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue received a call regarding a possible house fire at about 11:55pm on Oct. 11.

Fergus and Elora stations responded to the call on St. David St. South with 30 firefighters.

“Upon arrival smoke could be seen coming from the rear of the home,” Karn stated. “All of the occupants had evacuated the home prior to our arrival.”

Karn noted "a male occupant of the home was transported by EMS to Groves for assessment."

He explained the damage was contained to a rear deck, a rear exterior wall and soffit, and the attic area.

“Crews remained on scene to check for additional fire extension and to remove smoke from inside the rest of the home,” said Karn.

Firefighters remained on scene for about one hour.

The damage is estimated at $50,000 and Karn said the cause of the fire was likely discarded smoking materials.
