DUFFERIN COUNTY - Six months after a fisherman found the body of Kaden Young in Belwood Lake, the boy’s mother has been charged in connection with his death.

On Oct. 11 Dufferin OPP announced that Michelle Hanson, 35, of Amaranth, has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

Young went missing on Feb. 21 after Hanson lost hold of the boy when the vehicle they were in was swept into the Grand River by fast-moving flood waters on the 10th Line near Waldemar.

Police, family members, friends and volunteers searched for the three-year-old for months along the Grand River and in Belwood Lake.

His body was discovered by a fisherman at 3pm on April 21 underneath the north side of the Belwood bridge, about 11km downstream from where Young was swept into the river.

“It has been a long, extremely draining two months of searching and now (it) has finally come to an end,” Hanson wrote at the time on Facebook.

Three days later the OPP stated an autopsy confirmed it was in fact the body of the missing boy. A candlelight vigil in memory of Young was held on April 25 at the Belwood bridge on Wellington Road 26.

Hanson is to appear in Orangeville court on Nov. 6.

OPP officials say police will not comment further on the charges against Hanson “to protect the integrity of ensuing court process.”

“The OPP sympathizes with and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of Kaden Young on his tragic loss,” stated an OPP press release.

“We also remember and recognize the many community residents and visitors who gave of their time to search for Kaden during the aftermath of this tragic incident.”
