ELORA - A best-selling Canadian writer will be presenting at the Elora Gorge Cinema this weekend.

The Elora Adventurers have invited Kate Harris, Canadian national best selling author of Lands of Lost Borders, to kick off its ninth season.

The Elora Adventurers was founded by locals Rick Goodfellow and Ian Evans in 2010.

The group meets monthly, summers excluded, to discuss adventure and passionate pursuits. Presenters range in age from students to retirees and have showcased every continent in more than 70 presentations.

“It’s an evening for people to share their stories, inspire others and our presentations don’t necessarily have to incorporate extreme athletic endeavours or extreme adventures,” Goodfellow said. “Sometimes they do, but often they don’t.

“We’ve had an extremely wide range of presentations.”

While many of the presenters are from the Centre Wellington, Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo area, Goodfellow said they sometimes make an exception.

“Occasionally when the opportunity arises ... and we have an opportunity to have somebody like Kate speak, we will,” he said. “So she kindly agreed to speak to our group.”

Harris’ presentation will take place at the Elora Gorge Cinema at 2pm on Sept. 16. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door at regular cinema prices.

A portion of the revenue will go to the Centre Wellington Community Foundation’s Jack Family Youth Recreation Fund.

Lands of Lost Borders ... recounts quite an ambitious ... bicycle trip that [Harris] and a childhood friend ... took ... along the Silk [Road], that ancient trading route in south central Asia going from Turkey to China,” Goodfellow said.

“The bicycle is a vehicle for her to be quite philosophical on any number of historic issues and current issues, world issues, and it’s  a very, very impressive book.”

The presentation will include a talk, photographs, videos and stories, Goodfellow said. Lands of Lost Borders will also be on sale and Harris will be available for a book signing.
