Canadian Field Regiment

On Artillery Day, May 26, at Guelph Armoury the Artillery Support Group dedicated a memorial to the 12th Canadian Field Regiment RCA (1940 to 1945). The memorial includes a plaque and a “25-pounder” gun and limber with the unit and formation signs that the regiment would have had in 1944. There was also a field artillery tractor gun and limber signed to represent the 11th Army Field Regiment RCA CASF (1939 to 1945) as it was in 1941. There was also a “25-pounder” gun signed to represent the 19th Army Field Regiment RCA CASF (1941 to 1945) as it was in 1944. These three guns, which honour the memory of the Second World War batteries that were raised from the Guelph and surrounding area in support of Canada’s war effort, are on display at the Guelph Armoury and belong to the 12th Canadian Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery Association. Present at the dedication ceremony was the last remaining member of the 12th Canadian Field Regiment, Fred Heber, at the age of 96. Also at the dedication were, from left, Ralph Webb, whose father was the commanding officer of the 12th unit from 1943 to 1945; Chris Paquette, from the Orangeville Legion and retired from the navy; Chris Skalozub, retired veteran from the air force also from Orangeville; Heber; Del Godin of the Orangeville Fire Department; and Rob Stark, president of the 12th Field Regiment Association.  Photo by Bill Longshaw
