Patrick Anderson named athlete of the year

MARTENSVILLE, SASK - Wheelchair Basketball Canada proudly announced the names of its major award winners on May 5 its 2018 annual awards banquet as part of the festivities of the 2018 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) National Championship in Martensville, Saskatchewan.

Patrick Anderson, of Fergus, along with Cindy Ouellet were named athletes of the year and Benjamin Palmer was awarded junior athlete of the year, while Joelle Buckle was honoured with the leadership excellence award and Kathy Ludwig received the true sport award.

The award winners each exemplify fair play and sportsmanship while committing to values of inclusion, stated officials.

“They are leaders in their communities, positive role models, and they display superior performance in their respective disciplines,” stated a release.

Anderson returned to the sport this year.

“One of the greatest players of all time, he took a hiatus from the national team following the London 2012 Paralympics, but much to the delight of his teammates, coaches and all of Canada, Patrick donned his Team Canada jersey once again,” stated the release.

This past summer, Anderson led the Canadian senior men’s national team to a silver medal finish at the 2017 Americas Cup, qualifying a spot for the 2018 IWBF World Championships.

Anderson averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists per game and was named MVP of the tournament. For more information visit:
