City police celebrating 170 years of service

GUELPH – City police will commence a year-long celebration on June 18 of the contributions that the men and women of the Guelph Police Service have performed while serving the City of Guelph for the past 170 years.

Sergeant Douglas Pflug said the service has learned through recent research for the service’s Fingerprints Through Time history book that Guelph Police holds the distinction of being one of the oldest police services in the province of Ontario. Services were formed in order: 1834 Toronto Police, 1836 Hamilton Police, 1840 Guelph, 1841 Kingston and 1853 Barrie Police.

Pflug said copies of Fingerprints Through Time: A History of the Guelph Police are available for $33.60, and Guelph Police’s new 170th anniversary commemorative coins ($15) will be available for sale on June 18 at 10am when police will unveil an anniversary banner.
