GUELPH – The provincial government has given the Guelph Police Service a grant to target gun and gang crime in the city.
Ontario will provide more than $113,000 over the next two years to police to beef up its fight against gang activity. Guelph Police will use the funding to strengthen its intelligence gathering operations, monitor criminal youth gangs and activity. It will also focus on providing at-risk youth with alternatives to the gang lifestyle.
Guelph is one of five police services being added in an expansion of the Provincial Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy program. The grant will bring the total of participating services to 22.
“The PAVIS grant is a vital component in supporting the Guelph Police Service strategic direction aimed at reducing violent crime in our community while supporting our community partners” said Judy Sorbara, chairman of the Police Services Board.
Chief Rob Davis said, “I applaud the provincial government’s continued support of the PAVIS program.
The additional funding ensures the Guelph Police Service can be proactive and committed to community development as we remain one of the safest communities in Canada."
