Centre Wellington Black Committee hosting CW Fun Day on Sept. 4

FERGUS – With a little seed money from the Centre Wellington wellness initiative, the Centre Wellington Black Committee (CWBC) is planning a community fun day on Sept. 4.

Established in December 2021, CWBC is a non-profit organization located in Fergus with a mission built on a strong ethical and transparent foundation of inclusivity for everyone and to build interrelationships within the greater Centre Wellington community, according to a press release.

Founder Millicent Gordon said the committee is working on issues in the background, like restoring Richard Pierpoint Park, and hopes that a new school to be built in Elora can be named after Pierpoint, believed to be the first Black settler in this region.

The committee is also working with the Upper Grand District School Board on an initiative to make Black youth feel more comfortable and accepted at school.

“We don’t expect everything to happen at once,” Gordon said in an interview. “Our goal is for everyone to settle into the community and work in harmony – not just Black people.”

The fun day is a way for everyone in the community to gather together and share some good music, good food, and good times, she said.

The event is slated for Sept. 4 from 11am to 6pm at Bissell Park in Elora. There will be food trucks, giveaways, a back-to-school fashion show, bouncy castles and face painting for the kids.

Entertainment includes Super L, Richie C, Jimmy Ried, Elle Trema and Mr. Zakious Cooper. DJ Cool from CKMS-FM 102.7 will host the event.

The event is free and those who come should bring their own lawn chairs.

“After two years of not getting together, we hope we can help bring the community together with this event,” Gordon said.

“It should be fun for the entire family.”
