Centre sets its season of music, comedy

General Man­ager Colleen Clack unveiled River Run Centre’s 2008-09 professional entertainment sea­son last week.

The season opens on Oct. 3 with the first performance in the Variety Series, a musical production Anne & Gilbert. with Chic Gamine on Jan. 29, Celtic Blaze with Stephanie Cadman on Feb. 26, and the Peking Acrobats on April 2.

The Blackmont Capital Mu­sic Series opens on Oct. 11 with Leahy, and continues Dec. 4 with John McDermott. Jazz sensations, Emilie-Claire Bar­lowe, DK Ibomeka, and Lori Cullen play on Jan.. 17; Jesse Cook performs Jan. 23; Ian Thomas headlines Feb. 13; and on April 23 Rik Emmett plays an evening of Eric Clapton music.

Village People play on April 30, and Cynthia Dale will end the season on May 20.

The classical arts series has three distinct traditional classic art forms. The series opens with Ballet Jörgen Canada’s production of Anastasia on Oct. 18, followed by a new Christmas show, Oh Night Divine on Dec. 11, by Roman­za, a group of tenors. Four performances of Touchmark Theatre’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead in February complete the series.

The new comedy series features three shows It begins with The Comedy Lounge on Nov. 1, followed by The Dance Party of Newfoundland on Feb. 6, and The Just For Laughs Roadshow on April 15.

Designed for children 4 to 8, the family series begins Dec. 7 with Franklin’s Christ­mas, and continues with theatrical adaptations of the popular books Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny on Jan. 10. Feb. 8 sees the arrival of Major Conrad Flapps. The series concludes with the production Stellaluna May 2.

Three more series in the Co-operator’s Hall will round out the season. The Guelph Music Series features five Friday night performances, each head­lining a different professional musician from Guelph. The Songbird Café Series on the first Tuesday of each month, offers patrons an intimate, cabaret-style evening of acous­tic music, by emerging regional singer-songwriters. The centre has partnered with the Kitch­ener-Waterloo Symphony to present three Kinderconcerts, for children to age 4, featuring small ensembles of profes­sional musicians.

Tickets for are on sale now through the River Run Centre box office. As part of the eyeGO program, high school students may purchase tickets at the box office for only $5 each.
