CANADA DAY: Big party planned in Drayton

Looking for something to do on Canada Day?

Come to Drayton and help Mapleton Township celebrate its 10th anniversary.

There are a lot of activities planned – something for everyone.

A huge part of the day is an exhibition ball game between the three-time world softball champs from New Zealand and the South Perth All-Stars at the Drayton ball diamond at 7pm. Admission for the game is $5, and people are asked to bring a lawn chair as bleacher seating is limited. This is a great opportunity to see world-class ball close to home.

Another big event is professional arm wrestling, featuring several current and past champions. This will be a sanctioned event of the Ontario Arm Wrestling Association, and promises to be very entertaining.

The day begins with a Mayor’s breakfast from 8 to 10am at the PMD arena ($5 per person, and ages 5 and under are free). A classic car parade begins at 10am from the PMD arena and goes to the Drayton fairgrounds, where all the other events will be held.

There will be children’s activities, a duck race, Frisbee golf, a hockey showdown, 3-on-3 volleyball, and exhibits in the old arena from area organizations.

An Iron Man/Woman/Child competition includes several events. For the adults, there will be rock lifting, the farmer’s walk, small bale tossing and large bale rolling. For the kids, there is nail driving, toilet seat horseshoes, a boot toss, and a “caber” toss. Who will be crowned the Iron People of Mapleton?

A dunk tank will provide the opportunity to dunk not only friends and relatives, but members of council and the local MP and MPP.

Remember old-fashioned bed races? This is event is back, anyone with a team of five can put wheels on an old twin bed. Do not forget a creative theme a d to complete with costumes, because there will be prizes.

Several groups are selling a variety of foods: burgers, fries, sausage, perogies, croquettes, ice cream, frozen yogurt, pies, and more, plus there is a beer garden.

The day ends with traditional Canada Day fireworks at 10pm, a free presentation courtesy of Mapleton firefighters and local dairy producers.

Admission to the fairgrounds is free, although some activities may have a nominal fee. For a complete list of events, registration forms, and ongoing updates, go to www.mapleton10.ca.

Come to Drayton on July 1 for a great day of fun.
