Building activity steady in Minto; agricultural construction value falling

Building activity here was down slightly in 2014, but not enough to concern the chief building official.

“We had a good 2014 … slightly below average but nothing we should be worried about by any means,” Terry Kuipers told Minto council in a year-end report at the Jan. 20 meeting.

The CBO pointed out permits were issued for 26 new residential units in 2014 and although “agricultural was a bit on the light side,” Kuipers said “everything is looking very good.”

Councillor Ron Elliott asked if building activity was “pretty equal across the communities,” that make up Minto.

Kuipers responded that building was “trending normally” and noted “Clifford usually doesn’t have the growth that Harriston and Palmerston have.

“Unit-wise, we probably found the most growth was in Palmerston, same as normal.”

Mayor George Bridge said regardless of where the growth occurs, “It will help all our taxpayers in the end because it just gives us more (assessment) base.”

Minto’s building department issued six permits in December, for construction valued at $584,000. That’s the same number of permits as the previous December but then construction activity was only worth $118,000.

Total construction value on 168 permits issued in 2014 was $14.7 million, down slightly from $15.4 million on 154 permits in 2013.

Residential construction generated the largest portion of the construction value last year, with 22 permits issued for single family dwellings worth a total of $4.7 million. There were also two permits issued for multi-family dwellings worth a total of $720,000.

In 2013, 15 single family dwelling permits were issued for construction worth just over $4 million and four multi-family dwelling permits were issued for a total of $1.2 million.

Industrial construction generated building activity worth $3.1 million on eight permits, similar to 2013 when four permits generated $3.2 million worth of construction.

Agricultural construction value was down substantially, with 24 permits for just over $1 million in construction issued last year, compared to 28 permits for $2.6 million worth of construction in 2013.
