Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On is January Big Film Fest feature

PALMERSTON – Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On is the Big Film Fest feature for January.

Screening on Jan. 16 at 7:15pm at the Norgan Theatre, the documentary/concert film explores the life, music, and activism of legendary Indigenous singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie.

Film fest officials state the film is “as captivating as its subject, who smashed through barriers to become an inspiration to fans and fellow musicians alike.”

Sainte-Marie was the first Indigenous person to win an Oscar, which she earned in 1983 for Best Original Song for Up Where We Belong, from An Officer and a Gentleman, a song she co-wrote. She was also the first recurring Indigenous guest star on Sesame Street.

This film divulges many lesser-known details of Sainte-Marie’s life, and includes comments from a collection of notable contemporaries, including singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.

The Big Film Fest is presented by the Minto Arts Council, in partnership with the Norgan Theatre and the Town of Minto on the 3rd Monday of each month, excluding July, August and December.

The films are presented by the film circuit division of the Toronto International Film Festival, which brings quality Canadian and international films to communities across Canada that would not otherwise have the opportunity to see such features.

All screenings are held at the Norgan Theatre, 275 Main St. W., Palmerston, and begin at 7:15pm. Admission is $10

Upcoming films in the series include Rosie, on Feb. 20 and Revival 69: The Concert that Rocked the World on March 20.
