Boards announce strategy for students to switch between learning models

GUELPH – The two local school boards in Wellington County have announced more details on their plans for allowing students to switch between in-person and virtual classes.

On Sept. 17, Wellington Catholic District School Board director of education Mike Glazier posted a letter to families on the board’s website.

“As described in the Ministry of Education’s school reopening guides, school boards are to set dates for families requesting to cross over between online virtual school and in-person models of learning,” Glazier states in the letter.

“A survey is available for elementary and secondary students desiring to make this change.

“Only families wishing to make a change are required to complete this survey.”

Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) spokesperson Heather Loney  said the board would be sending out a survey in October to gage how many students are planning on switching between remote learning and in-person learning.

Elementary

For elementary students in Wellington Catholic, the survey will remain open until Sept. 25 at 5pm. Families are asked to complete a survey for each elementary student they wish to switch.

Any changes to either of the models will begin on Oct. 5.

The next crossover date will be in January at the end of the first term.

The survey is available here.

In the UGDSB the board is targeting a switch date at the end of the first reporting period at the end of November. A specific date is not yet decided.

Secondary

The survey for Wellington Catholic high school students will open on Oct. 9 and close on Oct. 16.

The survey information will be available early in October. Changes to the learning model will come into effect at the end of the first quadmester on Nov. 16.

The next opportunity to make a chance will be at the end of January.

In the UGDSB the change will take place at the end of the first quadmester in mid-November.
