In its role as a resource to and advocate for artists in the area, the Guelph Arts Council has recently been involved in efforts to draw attention to the plight of artists facing serious medical challenges.
Sue Richards is a Guelph-based writer and artist diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which has left her unable to work. Like most self-employed people, she has no medical benefits or extra health insurance, and governments in Canada do not offer support to people with disabling illnesses until they are virtually without assets.
Several of Richards’ friends – known as Team Sue – are organizing a follow-up to the successful fundraiser they held in Eden Mills this spring. Healing Tunes and Energy will take place this Saturday at Guelph Youth Music Centre, showcasing well-known city musicians Jeff Bird, James Gordon, and Sue Smith, and offering a silent auction for an array of healing services donated by the many who have been involved in helping Richards alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s.
There will also be a special announcement by Guelph Arts Council about a new initiative to support artists dealing with debilitating health issues.
Doors open at 7pm on Saturday for the silent auction, and performances start at 8pm.
