Battle of Waterloo at Industry Day

The handle on Grand River Raceway’s marquee event, Industry Day, was up by more than 20%.

On-track wagers for the Aug. 3 event increased 21% over 2008 with $109,867 for this year’s 11-race card. The overall bet, including simulcast outlets, totalled $268,102, a 26% rise over last year’s event.

The afternoon featured the 12th running of the $300,000 Battle Of Waterloo for Ontario-sired two-year-old pacing colts.

A new companion race for fillies, the $150,000 Battle Of The Belles, was also featured on the $585,000 card.

Race favourite Wellthereyougo captured the Battle Of Waterloo in a matching stakes record time of 1:55.

Driver Randy Waples, a native of Fergus, captured his third Battle Of Waterloo title with the win. It was the colt’s third win in five starts for trainer Dr. Ian Moore who shares ownership of the Camluck colt with R G McGroup Ltd., of Bathurst, N.B. and NHL legend Serge Savard, of Saint-Bruno, QC.

Industry Day also featured a 25th birthday salute to Ontario stallion extraordinaire Run The Table, who came to the winners circle to accept his commemorative blanket, with owners Jack and Don McNiven of Killean Acres.
