Arthur Seniors Centre temporarily closed

WELLINGTON NORTH – The Arthur Seniors Centre has been closed until Dec. 31.

Wellington North CAO Mike Givens said the township made the decision in consultation with volunteers at the centre after discussions on how to implement COVID-19 protocols at the hall.

In an Oct. 15 email to the Advertiser, Givens explained the Arthur Seniors Centre is among the township-owned facilities operated by volunteer groups with township support.

While Damascus Community Hall, Mount Forest and District Sports Complex and Arthur and Area Community Centre all continue to offer facility rentals, Givens said the decision not to book functions at the seniors centre followed the implementation of a provincial proof of vaccination requirement for such facilities.

“In some instances, we make decisions on how to best operate safely, or in times like this whether to operate at all,” Givens stated.

“We consult with these groups prior to these decisions being made. We share information and offer guidance considering the facility, types of rentals and most importantly the health and safety of all.”

Givens noted the township made the decision to utilize the services of a third party to support proof of vaccination protocols.

“This enhanced service was offered to the community groups at our other halls to support them.  Some took us up on the offer, others were unsure how this could be properly instituted given past practices at particular hall(s),” he said.

At some Wellington North halls the opening, screening, setup, take down, cleaning and closing functions are handled by the volunteer groups.

“In this current environment, increased diligence is required for many of these functions and some groups do not have the resources or ability to address these matters. Township has offered spray disinfectant and hand sanitizers,” Givens stated.

The CAO pointed out COVID-19 measures such as the facility restrictions, are under ongoing review.

“We are constantly considering and reconsidering decisions as more information becomes available from both the province and public health,” he stated.

“Directions change quickly and we have and will continue to be as fluid as possible on decisions to best ensure important services are available in a safe manner.”
