The Guelph Curling Club is hosting the 2017 Hy-Grade Steel Roofing Masters Canadian Curling Championship April 2 to 9.
Men’s and women’s teams aged 60 and over from all over Canada will represent their home province or territory.
The Guelph Curling Club was chosen as host this year by the Ontario Curling Association, said host committee co-chair Doug Goff.
“They approached us to see if we were interested for two reasons; one is that we’re one of the very few eight-sheet clubs in the province … and we have also had very successful provincial events in the past,” Goff said.
Guelph Curling Club volunteer Tom Nolan said, “I’m looking forward to the quality of curling. These are people that have won their way here within their province, so these are very good curlers.”
Opening ceremonies take place at the Guelph Curling Club on April 2 at 6:30pm and draws start the next day. The championship gold medal game will take place April 9 at 10am for the women’s teams and 2pm for the men.
“We want them to have a successful tournament as far as curling goes, but (also a) very, very memorable time during their stay in Guelph, and I think that’s very important,” said Glen Duff, chair of the media committee.
About 100 volunteers will help with every aspect of running the championships, from transportation to time keeping to ticket sales.
Rod Stork, co-chair of the host committee, said this tournament will be great for Guelph.
“It’s just another opportunity for us to show Guelph off, not just the Guelph curling club, but the city of Guelph and surrounding area,” he said.
Tickets for the tournament are $15 for a day pass or $45 for the week. They can be purchased at the club office or online at 2017masterscurling.ca/tickets.
