Councillors here approved changes to the public works department which will see the additional position of roads superintendent.
On Jan. 24 Wellington North council made the decision regarding the restructuring of the department.
The changes to be implemented will help to smooth the transition created by the upcoming retirement of Public Works Manager Gary Williamson after 30 years of service in the community.
Chief Administrative Official Lorraine Heinbuch said, “This restructuring within the public works department is the first step in realigning our organization to meet the current and future needs of our residents.”
The Public Works manager and the works foremen will release some of their duties to the person who will fill the newly-created position of roads superintendent, she said.
“Council intends to fill this position internally, from the existing talent pool.”
Improved coordination leading to more efficient service delivery is expected from this reorganization, she said.
Council has considered community input, professional advice, management recommendations and comparison with similar municipalities, to come to this decision.
“Council sees the importance of succession planning to ensure reliable service delivery,” said Mayor Ray Tout.
“We have moved decisively this evening to aid in a smooth transition.”
