Local students were recognized here recently for their efforts promoting remembrance through poems, posters and essays.
Having passed the first two rounds of competition, their work will now head on to the Ontario Royal Canadian Legion District Competition.
Parents, students and members of branch 275 gathered recently for the awards,
Fergus Legion Branch 275 president Ray Pearse stated “Before we proceed to the consideration of the business which has brought us together, let us pause to think reverently of those of our comrades who by sea, land and in the air, laid down their lives for their sovereign and country.
“Their sacrifice will ever inspire us to the end that those who survived and need our aid may be assured of assistance and that the country in which we live and for which they died, may ever be worthy of the sacrifice they made.”
Pearse introduced to those attending “a group of young people who put in submissions this year … and I’m so happy to see a lot of them here.”
He then turned the meeting over to Youth Education Chairman Fred Hiller.
Hiller welcomed the schoolchildren who participated in the Remembrance Day poster, poem and essay competition. He also welcomed the school principals, parents and children to Branch 275.
“I feel we’ve had a very successful year with over 400 posters, essays and poems from the school,” Hiller said.
Eight of those student submissions went on to zone competitions.
The ones selected by the local branch were presented with Fergus branch certificates and awards at the schools.
Out of the 3C zone, four submissions are heading to the district competitions, Hiller explained.
Heading on to the zone competition are the submissions by Payge-Marie Lovella Hough (intermediate poem), Cameron Rodrique (primary black and white poster), Connor Koster (intermediate black and white poster) and Spencer Menken (senior black and white poster).
“I have great hopes for all of them,” said Hiller.
From the district competitions, winners would head on to provincial competitions.
Hiller later said in the essay competition a young lad wrote about a man who was a good friend and neighbour.
