Councillors here are going to try again for funds to make the Harriston Seniors Centre and the old Harriston Town Hall buildings more accessible.
In 2009, they applied for a grant. Though unsuccessful, Treasurer Gord Duff said the federal government sought new submissions. This time the maximum funding is $75,000.
Jennifer Cowan, access-ibility clerk for Wellington County, again agreed to help.
Council to apply for the same projects as in 2009.
“The upgrades to the washrooms at the Harriston Seniors Centre and the old Harriston Town Hall are still worthy projects which the town has difficulty with paying the whole cost,” Duff said. He added a municipal contribution to the project could be included in the 2011 budget.
Duff said the recent federal announcement was a pleasant surprise. “We weren’t really expecting another round of this,” he said.
“The good News is that the maximum amount has gone $50,000 to $75,000. The bad News is that the application has gone from 27 pages to 45 pages.”
He explained the intent is for projects he considers to be the most achievable.
