20th anniversary of amalgamation kicks off Culture Days in Wellington North

KENILWORTH – Wellington North is celebration 20 years of amalgamation on Sept. 27.

This year marks the anniversary of the amalgamation of the townships of West Luther and Arthur, Arthur village and the town of Mount Forest along with portions of Peel and West Garafraxa.

On Sept. 27 from 11am to 2pm Wellington North council and staff invite the community to celebrate at the council chambers in Kenilworth for a community barbecue and an official cake cutting at 11:30am.

The date coincides with Wellington North Culture Days which takes place from Sept. 27 to 29.

Celebration organizers are hoping the community as well as past council members will come out to celebrate.

The Wellington North Cultural Roundtable will display memorabilia to remind visitors of the past while at the same time looking forward to continued growth and change over the next 20 years.

The township has a number events planned for the weekend including:

– The Lynes Blacksmith Shop in Kenilworth will be open from 9am to 4pm on Sept. 28 visitors can check out the progress in preserving the 1870 blacksmith shop.

– The Metz Pumpkin Fest will take place on Sept. 28 from 3 to 9pm. The event includes pumpkin and zucchini weigh-ins, children’s activities and a catapult launching pumpkins. 

Visitors can bring a salad or desert and hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided.

– On Sept. 28 from 10am to 3pm, the Arthur and Area Historical Archives will be open with exhibits on World War I and the history of Canada’s Most Patriotic Village. 

– The Mount Forest Museum and Archives will also be open from 10am to 3pm. The latest exhibit highlights the age of studio photography.

– On Sept. 27, the Mount Forest and District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the opening of its new office at 248-B Main Street with a community barbecue, open house and cake cutting from 4 to 9pm.

– Scottish dancers will be performing at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Mount Forest on Sept. 28 from 2 to 3:30pm.

– The Wellington North Farmers’ Market  will be open Sept. 27 at 320 King Street E. from 3 to 6:30pm.
