Savings driven into more road projects

Councillors here are using contract savings on road projects to make room for additional works this fall.

On Monday night, council authorized two additional projects which will involve the paving of up to three kilometres of the 6th Line east in Pilkington between Sideroad 10 and Sideroad 14.

The second project involves the drainage works and reconstruction of Queen Street in Belwood from St. John’s United Church to County Road 19.

“It’s a good news story of additional road works funded by savings,” said Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj.

Chief financial officer Wes Snarr added the $600,000 in savings should be enough to fund both projects in their entirety.

The estimated cost of the 6th Line project is $330,000 and the reconstruction of Queen Street is about $200,000.

Councillor Kelly Linton asked about the criteria used to determine which projects were chosen.

He was told public works was consulted prior to the decision and both were projects the department had wanted to get done in 2012 if there were sufficient funds.
