Catholic board obtains five eco-school awards

GUELPH

Five  schools in the Wellington Catholic District School Board have become Ontario Eco-school certified, including a gold awarded to the district’s largest one, St. James Catholic High School here.

Four additional elementary schools have also been certified, including: Mary Phelan Catholic School, silver; St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School, silver; St. Joseph Catholic School, Fergus, silver; and St. Mary Catholic School, Elora, Bronze.

The certification program provides benchmarks and a scoring system for schools wishing to assess their environmental performance. The point system establishes bronze, silver and gold levels of schools from kindergarten to grade 12 to develop ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce their ecological footprint.
