Fergus Brass Band kids concert a big hit

FERGUS - More than 70 children and their parents participated in the Fergus Brass Band’s recent Kids’ Concert at Millburn Boulevard Park here.

They marched around the park behind cymbal player Louise Church to the sound of Disney’s It’s a Small World.

They all gathered on a blanket to enjoy cookies with their Teddy bears as local singer Terry Wilson sang Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

Many contributed their own verse of Down by the Bay and Wheels on the Bus.   Early Years staff of the local Community Resource Centre led the hand signs that accompany the interactive songs.

Band members joined the fun by wearing the funny hats that have become a trademark of the annual event.

It was sponsored by the Centre and North Wellington Community Resource Centre, which provides a range of children’s and other social services.

“Music has a very positive impact on a child’s literacy skills. The music’s rhythm helps young children with their verbal skills. When over 200 people come together to share in some good fun ... it is a sign of a healthy community,” said Resource Centre Executive Director Ron Mackinnon.

A group picture was taken. Copies are available at the centre office behind the Brew House on St. David Street.  Digital copies are available by emailing bandmaster@fergusbrassband.ca.

The Fergus Brass Band has contributed music and entertainment for many local activities each year since its founding 156 years ago.

Regularly through the years more than one-third of members have served for more than 30 years.

Currently, Paul Landoni has served longest, at 62 years. People interested in joining are welcome at the band hall opposite the Fergus Legion during any Tuesday evening practice between 8 and 10pm.
