Fergus Dog Park makeover a grand success

FERGUS - More than 150 dog owners and their four-legged friends were on site at the Fergus Dog Park’s grand opening on June 26.

The park received a number of renovations as part of Sinking Ship Production’s Giver television program.

Set to air on TVO in 2012, Giver featured six local children working alongside two hosts to make over the Fergus Dog Park as a means of giving back to the community.

The most notable addition to the park is the dog agility equipment.

The system, designed by Dog-on-It Parks and partially installed by Yard Weasels, it is the first of its kind to be installed in Ontario.

The park also features an oversized dog fort, freshly planted trees, a new water line, new bulletin board (donated by Dreamland Pet & Equine), a bench, picnic table, and a bark mulch trail.

Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj noted that the volunteers were vital to making this ambitious makeover a reality.

“The nearly 30 volunteers who worked all weekend were vital in making the park more user-friendly for both the dogs and their families,” Ross-Zuj said.

“This has turned the park into an excellent asset for both residents and visitors to Centre Wellington.”

A number of local businesses also supported the build, including Yard Weasels, CBM Concrete, Campbell’s Sanitation, Dixon Home Hardware, Little Tree Garden Market, Grand River Caterers, The Goofie Newfie Pub & Grill, Van Gali’s Café & Inn, Zehrs, and Dreamland Pet & Equine.

Originally started as a pilot project in September 2009, the off-leash park was made permanent in March 2011 due to the partnership work of the Centre Wellington Dog Owner’s Group.

The park is located at 840 Glengarry Crescent, and it is available for use by the public from dawn until dusk every day.
