Sixth annual fishing day for kids runs on May 7

BELWOOD LAKE - The sixth annual Shimano Take a Kid Fishing Day runs here again May 7 with two sessions.

The event is designed for youngsters who want to learn about fishing and it is a hands-on event with sessions in the morning and afternoon.

Professional anglers will teach children how to catch more fish on their local waters.

The day includes:

- a free tackle package;

- free barbecue lunch;

- free fishing seminars,

- fishing skills lessons;

- the Ontario Angler and Hunter Tackle Share program

- a fly tying station;

- archery lessons; and

- trout fishing.

Children will be divided into groups and will spend a set amount of time at each of six stations. The morning session begins with registration at 8:30am, with lunch at noon, and an afternoon session from 1 to 4pm.

 Kids will learn about fish with a biologist, rig lures and tie knots, fish for rainbow trout in the stocked pond, have an introduction to archery, tie their own fly, and attend a bait and lure workshop.

The event is free, but park admission of $2.75 per child and $5.25 for adults is required.

Space is limited to 120 children and they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Register for the morning or afternoon session by calling 519-843-2979 or email Derek Strub at dstrub@grandriver.ca.
