Extensive blaze shuts down main street, causes $380,000 in damage

by Chris Daponte

HILLSBURGH - A major house fire that shut down this village’s main road for several hours last Sunday has caused about $380,000 in damages.

Erin Fire Chief Dan Callaghan said the department received a call on March 13 at about 5:55pm regarding a report of a house fire at 112 Trafalgar Road (formerly Main Street).

Firefighters from both the Erin and Hillsburgh stations responded to find an “extensive blaze” on the second floor of the home, Callaghan explained.

Overall eight trucks and 31 firefighters were on the scene and took about two hours to fight the blaze. However, the fire department remained on the scene until about 5am the next morning to ensure fire was completely out, Callaghan said.

He told the Advertiser department officials were extra cautious with the fire, given the home is located directly north of the Butcher’s Furniture building.

The occupants of the house, who were home at the time the blaze started, were uninjured, and all firefighters also escaped unscathed, said Callaghan.

He estimates the fire caused $380,000 in damages and destroyed the centre portion of the upper floor. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, he added.
