Pet rescue kits

Dr. Emma Watson of Heartland Animal Hospital was at the Mount Forest fire station on Feb. 28 to demonstrate new pet rescue kits for members of the Wellington North Fire Service and local dignitaries. The donated pet rescue kits contain three different sizes of rescue masks, an oxygen therapy unit, blanket, leash and animal carrier. Above, Watson, assisted by Arthur firefighter Chandler Cutting, demonstrates how the oxygen mask works on Georgia, a dog belonging to a Heartland Animal Hospital vet technician. Watson will be training and certifying firefighters in Mount Forest and Arthur in pet first aid and CPR. Kits will be kept in the Wellington North Fire Service pumper trucks. The donation is a result of a public-private partnership between Heartland Animal Hospital, Invisible Fencing by KW Sprinkler and the Wellington North Fire Service. It was also announced last week that a local business plans to establish a trust fund to help pet owners pay for medical bills. Over 150,000 animals die in house fires in North America each year, including, unfortunately, some in Wellington North, which Fire Chief Dave Guilbault says is “simply unacceptable.”   Photo by Lynne Turner
