Swimming like dolphins

Every Tuesday, about 30 athletes come from Centre Wellington and Guelph to participate in the Special Olympics swimming group at the Centre Wellington sportsplex. This program has been in operation for about eight years and is available to all ages. Head coach Jerica Hamilton has been running the program for about five years. Two of the athletes attended the provincial games in London this year. Awards were given out to the top three who placed in the local swim meet. On Jan. 30 Khaden Nowack, right, accepted his award from assistant coach Margot Mauret, Hamilton and assistant coach Shaun McCwen. Hamilton emphasized that all the athletes that went to the London Aquatics Centre improved their personal times in all races from between three and 10 seconds. “People underestimate special needs people and they should come out to things like this practice to actually see what they can do,” said team trainer Dale Willis.   Photo by Bill Longshaw
