Mapleton teen dead following snowmobile accident

TINY TOWNSHIP - A Mapleton teen is dead following a serious snowmobile crash here on Thursday.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP officials say officers were dispatched at 5:41am on Dec. 28 to a snowmobile trail just north of the Tiny Flos Township Townline.

Police say a 16-year-old male from Mapleton Township, the lone occupant of a snowmobile, died after the machine “left the trail and struck a tree.”

His identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

“Investigators are citing speed and driver inexperience as possible contributing factors to this fatal crash,” stated the OPP press release.

Police added the investigation is continuing and a post mortem will be conducted at a future date.
