Tae kwon-do tournament winners

On Oct. 14, a seven-member team of students from Centre Wellington  Martial Arts Academy of Fergus competed at the 2017 Erie Shores Invitational Tae Kwon-Do Tournament in Leamington. This annual tournament features five different events, consisting of multiple divisions and was attended by over 150 competitors. The Fergus team, led by head instructor Chris Mulligan and instructor Sheila Hare, took home 17 awards in 26 events - including pattern, sparring, sword sparring, breaking and self defence - with some winning champion status in multiple events. “It was an incredibly tough day, with lots of competitors and for some of the team members this was their first tournament,” said Mulligan, a third dan black belt. “So we are incredibly proud of how the entire team performed... they have been training really hard for a while to prepare for this event and that hard work paid off for them. Every one of them really set an outstanding example of dedication and sportsmanship for their fellow classmates and represented Centre Wellington and the academy with outstanding effort.” Team results (in alphabetical order) include: Ben Martin 1st in breaking, 2nd in patterns, 3rd in sparring; Breanna Mulligan 3rd in self defence, 3rd in patterns; Draiden Davies 1st in patterns, 2nd in sword sparring; Isabella Mitchell 2nd in breaking, 2nd in sword sparring, 3rd in patterns; Jonathon Mulligan 1st in self defence, 1st in patterns, 2nd in sparring, 3rd in breaking; Nathan Brown 1st in sparring; and Tyren Davies 3rd in self defence, 3rd in sparring. Located in the historic Fergus Market on the banks of the Grand River, CW Martial Arts Academy was opened in 2013 and is the only dojang in Centre Wellington offering tae kwon-do training. Self-defence classes are also offered.  Submitted photo
